Why Diesel Engine Not Used In Two-Wheelers

Today I am going to tell you some reasons why diesel engines are not used in two-wheelers-

  1. Due to high compression ratio, diesel engine produces more vibration and noise as compared to the petrol engine. It is not possible for a light vehicle to handle this high vibration and noise. That's why diesel engines are not used  two-wheelers in .
  2. Diesel engine produces approximately 9% more carbon-di-oxide per litre as compared to the petrol engine. So it makes greater pollution than petrol engine and it is not good to use for environment.
  3. Diesel engine works on high pressure, so wear and tear is high in diesel engines. To reduce this wear and tear oil change are frequently required.
  4. Diesel engine has lower power to weight ratio.
  5. Diesel is much harder to ignite than petrol and relies on very high compression ratio so cold starting with such a small engine is difficult.
  6. Diesel engine produces more torque but low rpm than petrol engine. So in two-wheelers where we need high speed, it is not suitable.
  7. When diesel burns, it produces a large amount of heat which can destroy walls of the cylinder and other parts of the engine if it not properly cooled. So to reduce this heat, we need a greater surface area and proper cooling system in engine. In order to achieve this greater surface area, the engines are made slightly bigger.
  8. If high power in diesel engine required, we need technologies like turbocharger or supercharger to pump more air into the cylinder, which increases its price and size of the engine.
  9. They produce comparatively less power.
  10. Diesel engines, due to their robust build are costlier.
  11. Due to their higher maintenance than petrol engines it is not suitable for two-wheelers.
  12. Diesel engines does not produce rapid acceleration.
  13. In diesel engines, CR(compression ratio) is very high, resulting in large pressures & high vibration. To withstand the pressure & high vibration., the vehicle body has to be strong. Hence diesel is used in heavy vehicles.

Due to these reasons diesel engines are not commonly used in two-wheelers, but  two-wheelers manufactures like Royal Enfield introduced it's first diesel bike but due to these reasons & due to pollution laws the bike was not so popular. However new technologies have to be made to overcome these types of limitations.
World's single largest two wheeler motorcycle manufacturer based in India has introduced it's first diesel concept bike named as Hero RNT, however it is still not available in market.

These all reasons does not mean that diesel engine is not better than petrol engine, but these engines presently not used in small two-wheelers. Diesel engines have it's own advantages.
